Not that I'm eligible for multiple reasons, but how many American sub 19:00 6k ergers that also have a degree in Mech Eng and the time to do a sailing competition would there be out there?
Re: Sub 6k'ers needed for America's Cup Sailing crew.
Under 10. More than half the Oly team was not sub 19 if I remember correctly. How was sub 19 determined? If it was sub 20 that would open up the field to almost any recent IRA mechanical engineering graduate.

looks like their qualification comes directly from the line before it in the ad:sab wrote:Under 10. More than half the Oly team was not sub 19 if I remember correctly. How was sub 19 determined? If it was sub 20 that would open up the field to almost any recent IRA mechanical engineering graduate.
Logic would be that they know a sustained 350 watts won't put them in position for a win....produce or have the potential to deliver sustained power (of over 400 watts) over 20 mins
NZ watt farming:

There could also be a return to the use of cyclors, the innovate use of bicycle power to run the hydraulic systems used to trim the sails and raise and lower the foils. Team New Zealand swapped arm power for leg power by replacing traditional grinding pedestals with four stationary bikes on its 50-foot catamaran in the 2017 America’s Cup. It was one of the many tech breakthroughs the Kiwis used in their upset of American-based powerhouse Oracle Team USA.

Confusing ad...
400 watts on a bike for 20 minutes is a not the same as a sub 19:00 6K.

Yeah it's way, way easier to go 400W for 20+ mins on a bike than sub 19 on an erg. Strange equivalency on their part if that's indeed their thinking.

I bet they got inside info on the NZ athlete testing & simply filled in the words to ge the watts they want.Rocket-Sauce wrote:Confusing ad...

Or they know the power output they needed from traditional upper body grinders.
Regardless, 85 kg athletes holding max watts for 20-25 minutes seems to be the Americas Cup race.
Weight restricted crews who need to maximizes power & sail a boat at speeds approaching 60 mph.
Training & fueling must be interesting (and highly structured)
And it seems switching the grinders to leg power is highlighting a new found freedom of hands to take on other tasks as well, such as controlling the foil rake so the helmsman does not have to (literally no idea what that means).
Regardless, it is a new era of legs powering the wingmast controls and the rake of the daggerboards
Re: Sub 6k'ers needed for America's Cup Sailing crew.
The change in rules opens the door for the return to bikes. This is a recent thing, as is the reduction in weight (and crew from 11 to
. This will mark the 3rd time for the bikes: Sverige in the early 80's then the Kiwis in the cat and perhaps now.
This is an interesting take for athletes looking for something different. Rowers have long been associated with various AC campaigns

The job has been re-posted over on row2k and it seems like they dropped the "sub 19 6K" requirement and just "produce or have the potential to deliver sustained power (of over 400 watts) over 20 mins."
