This past September, we took delivery of 5 Initiator singles. Without having seen one in person, I was a touch apprehensive about the purchase. But, due to time constraints and the difficulty of getting singles, as well as the price ($3,700 each), I took the plunge.
I have been very pleasantly surprised by the boats. Over the past 28 years, I have purchased new or used small boats from nearly every manufacturer (Wintech, Fluid, Swift, Empacher, Vespoli, Hudson, Kaschper,...). These singles are either on par or slightly better than the "base model" of any other single (with the exception of Empacher). The hull is STIFF and not too much heavier than a typical racing hull. It is slightly wider (~5cm) than a Fluid of the same weight class. Because it is the "intro" level single, there is a footwell in the bottom of the shell for a novice sculler to step into the boat. (They can put their foot in the boat rather than having to step onto the deck and try to get their slide under them.)
The rigger is a standard, aluminum, stern-mounted rigger and is a bit heavier than your "high performance" rigger. As part of the partnership between Sykes and Resolute, the shells come with Resolute's foot stretcher assembly. They are easy to use and adjust. However, if you have a Midweight/Lightweight with large feet (size 12+), it is a tight fit to get those shoes in the cockpit.
The boats row very well. And, despite their price point, move quickly for an experienced sculler. Unlike a lot of the other small boats I have purchased, I am not too concerned about long term wear and tear drastically shortening the lifespan of the boat. They have a proven shoe/track system and the hull is solid. All in all, if you are looking for a quick, cheap way to expand your small boat fleet. These are worth a look.

Appreciate the review!
Re: Sykes Initiator 1x Review
An Australian boat manufactured in China and imported into the United States. The duties on the boat could be more than the boat itself.

Anybody know what the final cost is for an East coast delivery ? No mention of the shell’s weight. ???
