International Federations propose new events for Tokyo

Aquatics look to be plain greedy by proposing increasing the number of events in the pool to 40, plus adding mixed syncro and high diving.

I would expect this to be received positively. Basically the Olympics is about making money so the model is to schedule a venue as much as possible and create as many viewing opportunities for a fixed number of athletes.

This was discussed in rowing many moons ago....the negatives of course are you can't saturate the schedule of a rowing/kayak venue due to weather and the changes necessary to make it possible to athletes to double up.

having said that, I'm sure I read somewhere that the IOC were concerned about individual athletes winning hat-fulls of medals.

Personally I think this is ridiculous.

Using the US as an example, I'm sure Eric Hieden, Bonnie Blair, Apolo Ono did very little for the visibility of speed skating in the US. Comparing to rowing...both rowing and speed skating were obscure but you have to still explain that rowing is performed those long boats you see in movies filmed in Boston, Philly and most definitely have to explain sculling vs sweep to the "ordinary Joe" but they certainly know the difference between short and long track speed skating.

In terms of $...It was nearly impossible to get speed skating tickets in 2002 for the "heats" in any event (long/short), it was actually televised, etc and I'm sure there are more eyeballs on speed skating than rowing in the Olympic coverage. Those eyeballs never attempting or exposed to either sports and certainly less in speed skating at least in the US.

Just as the UK celebrates Sir Redgave and Sir Pinsent, these are the types of athletes TV viewerships adore. So whether the athletes is making the trip to the podium multiple times in one Olympiad or slogs it out over 3-4 Olympiads. The 'hero' portion comes from the success/visibility. The athlete, sport and the IOC all benefit from this visibility.

I hadn't thought of the weather/scheduling thing for limiting the number of medals in rowing. Multiple medals/sport is the best for $$$ and exposure and if it's easy to use the venue for it, why not? Who would know Michael Phelps if he only had 4 gold medals? Especially weird since he has medals in butterfly i.e..(a slower kind of swimming).

The venue is shared between rowing and canoeing so just say one week each with one day, in case of cancelation. And what people feared would happen in Sydney actually did happen in Rio (days of cancellation). The rules of rowing were changed a bit as a buildup for Sydney so that cross winds/fairness monitoring, cancelation would be taken into consideration...first instance of use was 1998 Cologne.

Anyways with 2 days of cancellation you still only really worry about programming as if 1:1 however some feared that you might take the best athletes and put them at a huge disadvantage if they were competing in multiple events. Additionally like any entertainment/show no-one likes cancellation as it dampens the economics of it. In contrast swimming is 'contained' and the show will just keep going regardless of weather.

Do other sports have a, b, c, etc. finals like we do? Seems like you could create a couple more medal events just by eliminating c and above finals from the singles.

You can't create more medal events because the IOC has a quota on the number of gold medals they will award.
