Dreher Apex to Croker Slick 40's

Post by AndyLynch »

So I just bought a set of new Croker Slick 40's to replace my Dreher Apex sculls. My Drehers were set at 288cm, 88cm inboard, boat is at 160cm span, used primarily in the single, sometimes doubles, occasionally quads. The Crokers are set the same currently. They feel like they're a bit more loaded than the Drehers did. Does anyone have experience making this transition? The only info I've been able to find online was at the Croker USA site, Greg's site, that suggested 0.5-1.0 cm shorter outboard between those two sets of oars. I'm certainly willing to tinker a bit. Any other thoughts out there?

It is correct to shorten them about 1cm , leave the inboard the same as normal. I always found that to be a personal preference.

I have no experience with the Drehers but have set my Crokers shorter than the club C2 smoothies with the vortex edge by 1-1.5cm. 1cm for sprints and 1.5 for Heads. The Crokers just seemed a tad too heavy on the back at 88/288. Unfortunately Kleshnev's rigging calculator doesn't include Crokers or Drehers for comparison.

I have a pair of Apex sculls I bought in 2000 that are still going strong. I can't count how many times I've replaced the grips.

For a few years I had a pair of Croker slicks, too. I gave the Crokers to the local club when I realized it didn't make sense to own two such similar pairs of oars. Both pairs were used in a 1x with span 159, inboard 88, length 287. From my experience, it would be hard to give a reason to set one pair longer than the other. Effects of head/tail wind and water temperature are a lot bigger than a 0.5% (1 cm) change in outboard.

However, those of you with C2 fat smoothies, go for a lot less outboard, as recommended by C2 and many users. Those things grip the water hard at the front end of the stroke.

I'm at 285/88/159 with my Croker Sculls. Started longer, but like them better at this length. Don't think I can go shorter without modifying the handles.
