Best way to add boat name

Post by Nosmo »

Any advice on what is the best way to apply names to boats? We have a number of older boats and it would be really helpful if we finally applied names to all of them. Any advice on how to apply lettering or what type of decals to buy?

Thanks,

Most any sign making shop will be able to produce stick-on vinyl letters, in nearly any font, and they're very inexpensive. The sign shop I use would do both sides of two boats for around $20, I'd guess. If you need any help let me know. The group of letters is easy to apply are very durable and they look totally professional.

Step one: Find white supremacy biker gang.

Step two: Find out who does their custom painting and pin-striping for their motorcycles.

Step three: Become my hero by having an awesome lettered and pinstriped name put on a boat. Gold leaf does look sharp on a dark boat as well.

Nice lettering makes the whole fleet look better, I think. Pick a contrasting color and a consistant font from boat to boat. Makes the fleet look like a fleet, I think.

Getting the vinyl is easy - applying it is the hard part. Use masking tape or straight edge and pencil to create a straight line and closely follow the directions about application. Once on it's not coming off in one piece. One problem with the high-deck or slope decked-boats is that people will align the lettering with the top of the deck, which gives them a sloping name when the boat is in the water. You must run the straight edge off the lip of the gunwhale and out onto the bow section. We had a parent do the lettering on our two boats and it looks all wrong on the water. Don't make the lettering too large and don't place it so it will be under water when the boat's rowed.

If you have each boat name cut out as the complete name it is very simple to apply all the letters at the same time perfectly with little or no measuring. It is very difficult to get anything but professional results.
Greg's online source is probably very good but if you want you can send me your info. and my sign guy can do it very inexpensively. Actually you can buy a printer for less than $200, I think, including software so you can do your own with your laptop.
I couldn't believe how inexpensively I could get totally professional results. Need an Empacher logo, name, etc. no problem whatsoever. I was ordering them from Deutschland before I figured this out.

Any font, any size, any color, very custom art work to simple block lettering, no prob.

My sign guy's minimum is $20 which I think will cover names for two boats with the name on each side. If you'll send me the following info: name, some idea of font, height of letters (upper and lowercase) and color, I'll have them made and I'll send them to you all at my expense so you will see how straightforward and easy this is. I really couldn't believe it myself once I discovered how cheap and easy it was to do.

Thanks All,
I think we are going to try Greg's source. Cheap and easy. We've got at least a dozen boats that need names. Now if we can just agree on good names....
The marginal cost for longer transfers is minimal so it is best to get longer transfers with multiple names and cut them.

Somewhat related... I just ordered a set of these for my bicycle, and plan to put them on my 1x as well, they are individual naming stickers, with country flags. Seem to be pretty high quality.

Pretty cool in that they actually shipped me 7 for a 6 pack so I have a spare in case of a poor application.
