Which reveals where the true problem lies.

Not wrong. I don't think OU has had a good stretch of time with really great assistants (who bring high-level rowing experience from somewhere other than this same program). The head coach can only do so much. But if I'm seeing things right, OU currently only has one assistant coach on staff. I assume that will change...there's no way you can run a good team with just two coaches.

OU has the same problem 'Bama does. Most people in rowing come from the coasts. Living in Tuscaloosa or OK CIty doesn't interest them, despite the great atmospheres for sports and the excellent support for the programs. Same for recruits -many would rather spend 4 years (maybe 5) in Orlando, Charlottesville, Clemson, Miami or Chapel Hill. Trowbridge is a good coach, did well at USD and has the program on better footing. They row well and are the kind of program that can knock a bubble crew out of the NCAA's. What may change their fortunes is the new ruling capping roster spots, while removing the cap on scholarships. If either can get an additional 15 B+ level athletes, their depth will help them in their team rankings. Other bubble teams like Duke or Oregon State (or Rutgers, with their tremendous fiscal problems) may not have that opportunity.

I want to add that OU beat 'Bama in the 1V8 at the SEC's last year.

Is knocking out a bubble crew but still sitting home and bean flicking some sort of uber flex?

A flex is always a flex considering how under the microscope results are evaluated for selection.

If my lower boat crews were underperforming I would have to consider restructuring.

I don't know that I would point at Clemson and Chapel Hill as places where coaching and rowing talent is flocking to. Knoxville isn't exactly on a coast and isn't a terrible comp for Norman.
