European Rowing Championships

Post by fatsculler »

The European rowing Championships kicked off today in Varese. Biggest news of the day was Romania smashing their own World Best Time in the W8 in the race for lanes, 5:49.79. GB in 2nd also set a new national record and were only just outside the old WBT with a 5.53.87.

Other surprises were the defeat of the Italian M4X who missed the A-Final and subsequently withdrew due to illness.
The Sinkovic's qualified for the final in the M2X whilst wearing uni suits designed as a tribute to Olaf Tufte

Edit: apparently times set at the Europeans only count as "European Best Times" not "World Best" as the competition is "only open to European Countries". A very silly rule by FISA

Damir loves to look out of the boat.

Solid women’s double race, people will not be happy with the Neutral athletes winning.

Very impressive win for GB in the M4- especially when you consider all four of the crew were making their senior international debuts. All of the men's team for the Worlds are currently away on training camp. Not only did the 4 take gold, they also set a new European Best Time

TThat was an impressive performance by the GB men’s four.

Crossy doesn’t accept excuses for race performances unless it’s a GB crew being rowed through.

Definitely more of a development regatta this year

ha, that was disappointing for the GB W4X, but a caveat is they are racing at Varese as part of their pre-Worlds training camp so it's difficult to gauge where they're at in terms of race prep (although it didn't seem to bother the GB W4-). They were also racing with a sub onboard which probably didn’t help. Great result for the Swiss, their first ever W4X gold medal

Italians underperformed this week (sickness?) and the Brits and Dutch not competing does flatter the result a little, but a good result for them nonetheless...as the saying goes, you can only race who turns up.

I know it's only the European Championships but is Simona Radis slowly putting together the most impressive rowing career in history? Who else has won so many boat classes, won doubling up, won sculling and sweeping, and with, from the outside, not the most obviously apparent power/build?

She is incredibly impressive.

Her abilities & desire to challenge herself (boat classes, doubling up) are Incredibly impressive & i thoroughly enjoy seeing what the Romanian team brings.

But 1.83m/75 kg doesn't seem like an outlier.

This has to be the worst coverage of any FISA senior event I have seen... almost impossible to find footage of any race.

It took some time for the videos to be posted yesterday because I was searching for them in the afternoon.

The link you shared auto-plays a dozen videos at once, and it is also missing the Sunday finals. There is not a single individual race video from the Europeans at https://worldrowing.com/world-rowing-video/ currently. I can't find links to the singles or eights finals. I want the sport to grow and become more popular, and World Rowing unfortunately makes it difficult for even an experienced spectator like myself to watch the sport.

i have been watching the races there every morning.

ah, got it - i rarely watch the 8+, so i never even noticed they didnt have the race up.
& I have had autoplay disabled forever - didnt even realize people allow it

I do wish FISA published more quickly/completey to their Daily Motion channel..
