The online databases contradict that statement. Marc Nowak's name is on the USRowing list of suspended individuals:
https://usrowing.org/documents/2022/12/ ... 012022.pdf

His name is not found on the US Center for Safesport list of suspended rowing individuals:
https://uscenterforsafesport.org/respon ... -database/

Strangely, Brandon Tucker, a youth rowing coach from Georgia is no longer on the USRowing list but remains on the Safesport suspended list.

For something so serious, this process appears to be poorly managed.
Nowak was there last September (Center for SafeSport), isn't now (was removed). So SafeSport opened and concluded its investigation. Et tu, USRowing staff?
You might consider just providing a link to the SafeSport database, and forget trying to have your own, with issues discussed above.

I have heard his contract was not renewed from a source close to the issue. I’m not sure of that though.

And PBR this is a “one allegation” situation and it is ridiculous if you know the details. Kinda unbelievable in fact.

Scores of former national team athletes and former national team medical professionals almost all of which are women have come forward to support him. It angers many of the athletes who he has worked with in the past to see his name on the list because they know he is a rock-solid medical professional with the utmost integrity. To lose someone like that is hard to recover from, especially given how much he knows about the sport.

Names are at the direction of SafeSport as I understand the process. They direct the conditions from which names end up on a list. Helps to keep NGBs from hiding anything

-Think gymnastics who hid accusations about specific people for years-

There are individuals from other sports who have had serious, real SafeSport allegations leveled against them (justifiably so) who have also managed to lawyer their way out of bans from coaching and back into the upper echelons of their sport. So I don't think it's true that SafeSport accusations are any kind of death penalty.

The flip side is the de facto shadow bans of those who are flagged on a complaint, with the confidentiality of the process leaving them questionable after all is said, done, and resolved to no one's satisfaction. The stain remains.

I'm sure the actual death penalty nailed a few baddies. But if even ONE person got railroaded, it undermines it all. ALL.
But if even ONE person got railroaded, it undermines it all. ALL.
Imagine if we lived in a world where this read, "If even ONE athlete got abused, it undermines it all." And yet hundreds and thousands have been abused, for years and years.

The athletes abused by a Shipley or a Nassar or countless others are every bit as innocent as a wrongly accused coach. They are destroyed by that experience, and definitely never made whole.

It would be amazing if neither of these things ever happened, but even in the world that we do live in, being accused of sexual abuse is NOT worse than being sexually abused. And one of these things is FAR more rampant than the other.

(That last sentence should not be a controversial take, but... I'm not holding my breath here.)

Whiff.

Nothing of what I said undermines the protection of the abused.

If person A does something bad to person B and is not punished that is a full failure of the system.

If person A does not do something bad to person B and is punished anyway, that undermines the system.

Yes, lots of baddies getting punished, but a few innocents getting punished too.

System has no interest in vindication narratives. Focus is investigation and prosecution.

They need to own misfires. It matters.

The deficiency in Safesport from my perspective is there seems to be no consistency to who gets placed on the public suspended list and for what reason.

Citing the worst of monsters (the Michigan doctor) to justify placing anyone with a single alegation on the list frames them all as monsters.

I'd hope that when an alegation is made against a USRowing doctor, trainer, or PT that management would immediately survey all athletes to determine if there is a wider issue. If other concerns are revealed then refer the accused to Safesport to investigate and place on the list as there may be an even greater public interest. If it is a single accusation still refer it to Safesport to investigate but behind closed doors.

Sometimes things remain as a single accusation because the investigation happens behind closed doors. Sometimes light reveals the truth. Can’t speak to this case in particular, but I’ve seen enough abusers get caught and the depth of their depravity was only revealed when alumni became aware of accusations and came forward with further information. Sports need to very publicly own when an investigation comes up negative as the consequences of even a negative investigation can be life altering, but lets not for one minute pretend doing things behind closed doors as has always done has led to good results.

You like full transparency? How about I name the rower who made the accusation against him?

If it was a false claim then why not? False claims are made by people every day? Better not to let these things hide behind closed doors, right?

I think the proposal made in my previous post makes a lot more sense.

Statistically speaking, false accusations are quite rare.

I think a practical question is if MN was posted to the Safesport database and was later removed, why is he still on the USRowing one?

Was the investigation dismissed or are we all supposed to know there is still a temporary action in place we are being publicly signalled to support(?)

If the name is just there because an admin hasn't removed it, that's not so good.

Again, IMO maybe keep life simple and have a link to the Safesport dbase, it strikes me that's the limit of the NGBs disclosure responsibility.

MN is still not listed on the Safesport website as being either under investigation, suspended, or banned but has been relisted on USRowing's suspended list as of this week.

There is certainly room for all under the USRowing bus...
