World Champs

Post by Chris A »

It seems that the weed was quite a big problem at the Holland Beker a week ago. Hope they get it sorted out for the Worlds. The furnace-like weather in Europe recently won't have helped.

I wonder if this is a taste of things to come and the 8 will become a "doubling-up" boat across all federations
The older I get, the better I was

It is a plausible solution to reducing athlete numbers at the Olympics as well.

1x 2x 2- 4-
then some combo races the 8+

10 boats is surely a low for New Zealand?

They only had 8 boats last year

Seems like it’s going this way, the coaches probably know this. GB is resisting and won’t give up the 8.

I think overall world champs have gotten significantly less competitive since 2021. NZ’s numbers are way down - large exodus after Tokyo, AUS is down in the dumps but getting a bit better this year Paris was unreal bad, Canada can hardly field a team and keep a CEO, Germany and NL are playing coaching musical chairs, Russia has been totally out of it until now, Ireland got rid of the reason they were doing well cause of feelings, Serbia is tiny, Croatia is tiny. Italy, SUI, and Romania are probably the ones trending well.

I’m worried about the sport.

Number of boats in finals at the World Championships over last few cycles. Its not perfect data on No. of entries as if there are 7/13/19 entries etc 1 gets eliminated and doesn't have a final. Definite increases in Olympic Qualifying years and some lows when WC is far from Europe and expensive.

Men's and Women's boats showing competitiveness of A final Pos 2-5 vs Gold Medalist. I dont use 6th place as often they throw in the towel in last few strokes and paddle in.

This is the number of finals made by countries over the last 3 cycles at the World Championships in current Olympic boat classes. Definitely some countries on the up (IRL, ESP, LTU, SUI) or down (RSA, UKR, GER & CZE).

And if the A final appearances are grouped by Olympic cycle and include WC and OG A finals in current Olympic boat classes (i.e. no 2+, 4+. LM, LW)

But looking at the under 23 entries it seems that GBR will stick its finger in its ears and shut its eyes about mixed boats until everybody else is doing it.

Until such time as mixed events are officially on the Olympic programme then GB won’t bother. As I’ve said many times before, the GB rowing team starts and ends with the Olympic programme

Well it certainly will be by the time these U23s are seniors.
