Redman boats

Post by Norm »

Possible new builder in the UK? Redman is a rower who also works for Bentley. https://redmanracingboats.co.uk/

Despite not having delivered a boat yet, there is some big talk on their website, And all this from a guy still working on his MBA. Alas, Bill gates never finished Harvard before starting his company.
Redman Racing Boats Ltd breaks the status-quo and changes the game in the process.
From experiences gained both within the world’s most prestigious automotive manufacturers and through competing at the highest levels of rowing, Redman Racing Boats Ltd is bringing game changing technologies to rowing racing shell design and manufacturing to give our customers rowing racing shells that are scientifically proven to be better than the competition on almost every metric at a price you can afford. We do this by bringing together the brightest and best of British rowing, engineering and business talent; from Henley and Olympic winning athletes & coaches to the finest optimisation, materials, hydrodynamic and data engineers Britain has to offer.
Redman Racing Boats Ltd is doing to rowing what Team GB did to world cycling and what McLaren has done to the high performance sports car industry.
our ability at Redman Racing Boats to understand the fundamentals and optimise accordingly is truly game changing.

Their gallery shows Empacher, Filippi. and other brands. Could they do that in the US without being sued?

Interestingly, there isn't a single piece of concrete information on the entire site.

Well, I'd like to see what their end product is, once it comes out. Personally, I think they underestimate how boats are designed and built, because there's already fair amount of science in the engineering of good shells, but I'm curious to see what they make and how it's different from the rest of the market. Color me "cautious".

The site's pretty typical of a first effort designed to satisfy investors and attract new ones. Actual product may be months away.

Having contacted the CEO and (eventually) had feedback I would agree with you there, being asked when I was thinking of getting a boat and what price point I was considering made me think there is still a good while before actual boats become available.

Its a shame really as I do think rowing needs to have the sort of subjective and publicly available testing data that they are advertising - often a new hull comes out yet we are expected to only believe the manufacturers that its the latest and greatest, but coming out before they apparently even have a boat out isn't a great way of building consumer confidence

I will be following them with interest and wait to see what data they eventually produce

Smells like a Theranos to me. Big talk, no proof.

in american business schools they have to do a project that looks something like this, initial marketing and a business plan etc. and then the person will sometimes try to extend that into a real company.

I wouldn't go that far. I'm quite sure it's a genuine effort, but I suspect it's very early days and they need something out there to get people talking (hey, it's worked!)

They might have done better using something like Kickstarter, which encourages better transparency and communication though.

Is this going to be another Lola/Aylings scenario?

Lola actually produced some boats.

Indeed, the production quality was exceptional. They were as stiff as steel rods, almost too unforgiving. Or at least the boat I tested was. Lola definitely knew their composites.

Yes, Too well really. I understood the reason they stopped was a number cruncher higher up realised the time and equipment being used to make boats could be spent making F1 parts and equivalent at much higher market prices, so they shut down the rowing arm

Hmmm, the fleet of pairs that they built for GB rowing were overweight, and they weren't building the carbon riggers with accurate pitches.

10,000 prototypes without one image. Guess those are virtual prototypes. It’s a whole lot of fluff, that website.

Reads like they also don’t value carbon fiber as a medium for building. Maybe they use a fabric like Kaschper, something from wind turbines that are not Kevlar, glass or CF.

Maybe they’ll introduce a graphene boat. Probably not.

Redman is a no-go. Couldn’t raise the startup money, apparently. Alas, nothing ventured...
