I think you are way over thinking this mixed rig oar thing.

I learned a short time ago by a great coach that you need to get a fast, for crew together and then start making a tweak or two. Start with basic rigging and go from there

Nosmo and I went OT. Prolly should have re-threaded.

Nosmo wrote:Did another inconclusive oar comparison on Saturday this time Macon C2 smoothie vortex comparison:

Work out was 3x10', but only got in a full 2x10'. I missed the first half of the first interval--due to needing to help another sculler with boat problems.
Had the coach take the C2's in the launch and switched oars on the water between pieces. The Macons were 2 seconds faster over 2200m, but there were so many other factors. I had to navigate two 180 degree turns and two smaller turns with a W8+, a W4x, and a M1x. At 2100m the Macons were 4 seconds faster but I made up 2 seconds in the last 100m with the C2's by avoiding a turn. Don't think fatigue made much difference. Wakes, turns and looking around to avoid the other boats I'm sure were much more important than the oars.

No surprise, but the oars seem to make much less difference than steering and other factors. Will continue to compare oars this spring. I should get better data after the SDCC when we move on to more 500m and 1000m intervals, and when more of the lake opens in a month and can do straighter pieces. Having the coach help swap oars on the water which is a big help.
Indeed, the variance between two long pieces is so great even with the same equipment.
