"Rowers Elbow" and Distal Biceps Rupture

Post by caustic »

Well, NGL, this sucks. MRI to confirm tomorrow, but the doc's pretty sure I have a complete separation of the tendon connecting my biceps on my right arm to the elbow :(. Apparently, this is an issue that can manifest in active adults in their 40s and 50s. So, uh, be aware of it. For me, I was working on my garage lifting a sheet of fire-rated sheathing, and felt multiple pops in my arm.

Assuming surgery, so looks like I'm off the water for this fall most likely :(

on the OTHER elbow, I got tendonitis of the bicep tendon too. I swear, I'm falling to pieces!

One thing is actually a bit of a surprise as how little pain this procedure actually has for me so far. I've broken four bones in my life, and each one sucked mostly because the pain was continual most of the time, slowly fading away until one day you just kind of wake up and realize that you don't hurt anymore. With this particular injury, the wound itself is still slightly sore, but I'm three days out from the procedure and otherwise I have no pain. really weird.

Caustic, I had a very similar injury in 2008, and outpatient surgery to repair it. It's been fine ever since. As I'm sure you know, doing the physical therapy is vital to recovery.

BTW, I think my tendon had been weakened by some nagging tendonitis (from raking leaves).

That's good to hear - I've been half worried because ,well, I've never ruptured a tendon before. I'm out of the splint now and in the brace, so now my long recovery begins :). My PT was optimistic, since the initial eval didn't reveal anything concerning, and even the doc said that surgery went as well as could be expected - no retraction of the muscle up into the arm, and so they could reattach it at the original points on the bone since there was only about 1CM of separation.

But yeah, I gotta make sure I do my homework! I can almost touch my shoulder with my fingertip! :)
