Re: Reshaping Athletics

With regard to possible changes to the NCAA DI championship: There is about 0% chance of reducing / replacing AQ teams with faster at large teams. AQs are a deeply ingrained principle within the NCAA DNA. It is very common for NCAA championship sports to have AQ selections that are not as competitiv...

Re: Reshaping Athletics

The federal judge in the lawsuit against the University of Oregon has rejected Title IX class action certification for the beach volleyball and club sport rowing plaintiffs. In an interesting bit of logic, the judge looked at race times posted by the club rowing team, determined that the rowers did ...

Re: Spring 2026 Season

by crewu » Sat May 30, 2026 11:11 am What were the women's 8s times in 1996? Xeno set the Oly record in the 1X that weekend but we're the women as quick as Texas on this same course? To the best of my recollection, the conditions were not conducive to fast times during the 1996 Olympics when the wo...

Re: Spring 2026 Season

The scoring system that sandor posted is correct. Applying this system to head-to-head racing is fine, but the real question is what happens when you get to a full field of 22 racing. In the five-team results posted by sandor, UCLA's first 8 only beat Michigan by .25 seconds. So it would be tough to...

Re: Spring 2026 Season

I don't think that shenanigans precipitated the 2022 change in lightweight weigh-in procedures. The IRA website cites "To ensure parity among the league, the coaches agreed in 2022 that all athletes...." The impetus seems to have come more from school-to-school or group-to-group difference...

Re: Spring 2026 Season

What are the rules of swapping across the separate rosters? There are a few NCAA bylaws that cover having a separate women's lightweight team. An institution that conducts a rowing program that includes heavyweight rowing and lightweight rowing may employ two additional coaches. Each of the institu...

You can read all about the IRA lightweight weigh-in procedures here: https://www.irarowing.com/coxswain-ltwt-weigh-ins Pertinent excerpts: Weigh-ins should be held prior to any spring race in which a women's collegiate lightweight crew is participating. A regular season weigh-in is to be held the da...
