Re: Building a dock for a college rowing team
How big is the dock? What are the constraints? Can you just rebuild what you have? Do you have to worry about marine growth? Salt or fresh water? Do you need to accommodate singles as well as 8+'s? There are a lot of ways you can go. My club just replaced a 10'x60' docks, and I did the design--it w...

Re: Building a dock for a college rowing team
Hmmm. I wasn't aware that USRowing mandated standards for docks - that's usually a coast guard or DNR waterway regulation, often more with accessibility and shoreline footprint. I did some basic google searching for "US Rowing dock standards", and nothing came up. Regarding *building* a d...

Building a dock for a college rowing team
My son is going to college in Ohio and the current dock which is pretty old and not up to US Rowing standards, so they aren't allowed to use it. The cost of replacement is $9,000. That seems high to me for a bunch of wood and some floats, but I never built a dock before. This is on a calm lake if th...

Re: Still Iced Over Poll
Not iced over, but might as well be. The water temperature is too cold to row my new single. It is sitting here with the cover on and I am staring at it waiting. I am figuring I can row when the water temp is 50 (10c). It is about 43 right now. Then of course there is water flow. The Allegheny river...

Re: Cold, Damn Cold
There are 8's and 4's out in Pittsburgh, but we are late this year and singles will be really late. Looking forward to trying out my new demo whip, but it is going to be a while I guess.

Re: Rowing vs Football
... Do you still think serious football talent would strengthen our rowing talent pool? There is no argument that could be made. Of course the football talent would strengthen the rowing talent pool. Just look at high school for the obvious example compare the kids rowing vs. playing football. Is s...

I don't think anyone would argue your success. Care to give a discounted lesson to my stepson?xenomuller wrote:Resistance training is extremely important, don't go to the championship without it.

Re: How important is weight rating?
h-curtis, just curious why you feel need a new ride at this point? A 2005 Hudson, unless it's really beat up, should be a very good boat. And you say it sets up for you despite your being a little over the design's weight. Do you feel that the rigging and oar settings have been optimized for you? T...

Re: How important is weight rating?
Thank you for all the responses. That was also an interesting read from Sykes. I suspect it would be best to get a boat that the boat builders deem appropriate for my weight. Just see so many mid weights for sale. Yes, there is that Fluid in Connecticut and I got an email from someone that has a Res...

How important is weight rating?
I see a lot of mid weight shells out there, but not many that are good for my 190-195lbs range. That is around 85-90kg give or take. Anyway, if a boat is rated at 185 and I am 193 for example, is that a big problem? There is a nice fluid not that far from me and I was wondering if a mid weight fluid...

Re: Junior lightweight rowing banned in GB
Have to say one thing. There are a few people that want to go to the grave with the idea of having no weight classes is best. I mean, eating disorders and all kind of silly arguments are being thrown out there. Any extreme case to prove some silly point. Bottom line is there are two weight classes. ...

Re: Junior lightweight rowing banned in GB
A quick bit of googling yields thousands of articles describing the dangers of low body weight, abrupt weight loss, EDNOS, female triad, etc etc etc. You can only claim this isn't documented with a major effort to remain willfully ignorant. Hope this is some joke. Do you want me to do a "quick...

Re: Junior lightweight rowing banned in GB
I have a question about weight loss, though slightly off topic. How can it be addressed in kids who do need to lose weight [read: fat kids]? Funny how this is also NOT talked about in favor of two categories. What about that kid that is 180 and really should be 150? A lightweight option could work ...

Re: Junior lightweight rowing banned in GB
I could not possibly have been able to healthily manage this in high school, either physically or mentally. Physically, I was growing until about my junior year of high school, and purposefully restricting calories during growth is widely accepted as a terrible idea. Mentally, there is no chance th...

Re: Junior lightweight rowing banned in GB
In addition, I was never very impressed by high school programs that avoided racing in the varsity event, either 8's or 4's depending on the program size, in an effort to just win. There are probably only 3-4 junior programs in the country whose size allows them to produce EARC caliber lightweight ...
