Phone stuck in bow buoyancy compartment
So after placing my phone in the storage compartment (I guess that's what it's called although I won't be using it for that purpose ever again) in order to strava the outing, it has slipped through a hole (approx 8x3 cm) into the bow compartment of this 8 man boat. Given the huge length of the boat, all attempts at tilting it to attempt to slide the phone out have been pretty unsuccessful, the next logical step would be to repeat this process after dismantling the boat into half. I'm relatively new to rowing but this seems like a hugely time consuming and annoying process.
Has anyone ever had a similar issue or have any ideas/advice?
Thanks in advance

A 3-seat once suggested we should train rodents for this purpose, after a spanner got stuck there for weeks...

On a more serious note, how about modifying a plumber's snake with hook-like tip?

That is not a "storage compartment." It is supposed to be an underseat buoyancy chamber. Unless you can find a trained monkey to stick in there, you may be screwed; and your crewmates will be none too happy with the sound of your phone banging around inside their boat.Pemgibeers wrote:So after placing my phone in the storage compartment (I guess that's what it's called although I won't be using it for that purpose ever again) in order to strava the outing, it has slipped through a hole (approx 8x3 cm) into the bow compartment of this 8 man boat. Looks like you're having to wait til the boat is dismantled.
Aaand... remember - there are no "storage" compartments in 8+ racing shells.
There ARE a number of different methods for mounting phones on bikes, boats, and other places - perhaps you could try one of those - if it's compatible with your coach...

Best bet, don't bring your phone in the boat. Too much at risk on what's on the phone and the cost of it.
If you people taking selfies etc , those are the ones you are usually in front of .

i have used the same phone in the phone in the boat every row for the past 4 years.lt.wolf wrote:Best bet, don't bring your phone in the boat. Too much at risk on what's on the phone and the cost of it.

a $20 waterproof pouch with a lanyard keeps it dry when it goes in the drink.
a bar bathroom on a friday night is a more dangerous place for a phone.
moreover, i have had my phone in a couple of emergency situations over that time, which is quite reassuring at 5 am on the Schuylkill.
it is nice to be able to call 911 when a body is floating in the river

So what did you do when a body floated by before cell phones ( wink) ....I would finish up my row and call when I land.

Re: Phone stuck in bow buoyancy compartment
Try to float it out.
Add a bit of water to the compartment (inch? half inch) and see if it floats up on that and moves with the water towards an exit point, and thus towards your hand/fingers/bit of bent wire.
May require a few of the crew to help roll and/or lift the boat.

What about using an old-fashioned wire hanger refashioned to fit the space?
