Fun video and really nice sculling.
I almost always win when all of the guys who are faster than I am don't show up.

Got a GoPro, got video from the stern deck of my race at HOCR. Now anyone have an idiots guide to video editing?

Video taken during last weeks 4s head, using a pair of video sunglasses I bought
Part 1

Part 2

Data was collected using the iPhone speedcoach app and overlaid using software called Dashware, also tracked the race in Google Earth so you can see the course I took (looks like I steered to close to Surrey/bowside at Chiswick Eyot as shown by the huge drop in speed)

I love it!!!
The camera angle tells me about how you row. This was totally unexpected for me to immediately spot who you row. LOVED watching it!!!

Thanks :D
It certainly made me think and look into breathing when rowing as it certainly picks up my laboured breathng as the race goes on :? it would be interesting to see other peoples sculling as well from this perspective, the only other one ive seen is the Danish Lwt Quad from Bled on this thread

Inspired by Xeno's post as well as by 1x Sculler's DIY ingenuity, I came up with a pretty easy way to mount a GoPro extended off the pin of my 1x in order to cature a 90 degree side view for stroke analysis. See the results from my first outing posted here: http://youtu.be/2z5ueGv1Ldk Comments (on GoPro set up or rowing :D ) welcome.

Awesome! Can you send some pics of what the set up looks like on the rigger? I have a GoPro, but have only used it on the stern deck so far.

Excellent. This type of angle gives me a lot of detail on timing and use of the body in the stroke cycle. Great job setting it up like that.

tpj, see this youtube link for a better view and explanation of the setup: http://youtu.be/LwlWnwTF6c4. Let me know if you have any questions. I have used it several times now and it's working great.

Great video - incredibly informative! Thanks for posting. I have a Fluidesign, so I'll have to figure out how to put some sort of extension on the rigger. I was going to initially try just putting the camera over the oarlock, but I'm not sure that would be far enough away.

Putting the camera over the oarlock might be worth a try. Not sure you need as much distance outboard as I got, but it is nice to be able to see the blade catching, which does happen pretty close to the edge of the frame.

I was lucky. The optional back stays that came with my Sykes just sort of worked for this purpose. The Sykes pin is long enough to accomodate the stay. Not sure what the Fluid pin and oarlock setup is. I'm guessing it does not have room for a back stay, but maybe you can get a longer pin. Then you would add a washer and nut above the oarlock spacers (not too tight), followed by a stay designed to fit the same size pin, and then another washer and a locking nut on top. Gord at Fluid can probably tell you whether it's doable. Then it would be a matter of finding the parts without spending too much.
