The idiots ice skating on the Charles river this morning

In January 1983 the explorer Bradford Washburn convinced a few of us coaches to walk out onto the basin racecourse with him to measure the distance with some sort of surveying equipment he had borrowed from the MOS. For safety, we tied long ropes around our waists with the other end securely around a tree on the shore. I don't recall life jackets, though. Back then, you could reliably walk to Newell from JFK St in January without using the bridge. One of the bay doors was always left ajar for entry from the dock. These days, probably not possible.
