Re: 2021 Olympics
What makes any sport 'real'? Running around a track, or swimming back and forth in a pool, or rowing are only "real" because people have been doing them for a long time, but are barely less arbitrary that surfing or skateboard. Personally, none of the judged/subjective sports belong. Also ...

Re: Crossfit Games 1k Erg test
I can't find it, but there was that documentary about the US men's 8 in the run up to Sydney. There was a clip in practice where Teti basically had them run "chaos" as a workout. I don't remember the exact line but it was something like "we're starting a piece that is somewhere betwee...

Re: LA Olympics 2028
This is a terrible proposal. Much better to race fewer lanes or a Henley style tournament over 2k than to reduce the distance. Long Beach can handle 2k, just not 6 across. Whats wrong with 1500m? rowing is rowing Why 1500? Why not 500 or 6k? Because 1500 is for pansy a$$ scholastic rowers not the O...

Re: The Coronavirus Crew Cut
Seems an apples to oranges comparison to talk about accessibility of a sport played recreationally and one played at a high level. Let's make sure we're properly assessing each. Same could be said for other sports that require niche equipment/facilities like sailing, motocross, car racing, winter s...

Re: Save Stanford Rowing petition
Why would Stanford keep a team that has 6 teams across the ENTIRE country to compete against? Probably because: 1. Lightweight rowing provides a competitive opportunity for a greater number of women and more diverse physiological composition. Only compared to hwt rowing. Not compared to field hocke...

Re: The Coronavirus Crew Cut
one way to get over the problem is just make your players sign a liability waiver. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29311945/ohio-state-football-players-parents-asked-sign-covid-19-risk-waiver I love this line "...the waiver is intended more for educational purposes than it is f...

Re: US Squad and Racing
Maybe 1 in 1,000's. There are tons of 7' who play college ball at a high level that never see the court in the pro's. How can you make up .1%, then dispute the 17% because its 7 years old? I get the 1 in a 1000 wasn't supposed to be scientific guess but come on. Regardless, the fact remains that be...

Re: Dutch system
This is one of those things that makes more sense in theory than when actually carried out on the water. Almost every crew that over-performed compared to expectations did it through an even pacing strategy. Commentators will call it as "Rower X is making a move through the 1000", when in...

Re: Olympics and rowing
No thoughts on what games the IOC is/isn't playing here...BUT there are a lot of other cool ways to race boats than 6 lanes 2k. The strongest argument for a consistent format is comparison across olympiads in the form of OR/WR times. We all know that those times don't mean $h!t in rowing, so why str...

Re: World Championships 2019
Let's not pretend that raw numbers tell the whole story. What % of the men's/women's 8s have a realistic chance at qualifying vs in the Men's single?
There might be 44 in the Men's 1x, but 10? 15? have zero chance

Re: Henley Royal Regatta
Random observations: 1) 4 Seat from St. Pauls was my favorite rower/robot in this year's race (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZPiGLATCfo&list=PLgHoN6LLDp__eHnMZhxoXWktOZSK4O45C&index=26). 2) Well documented, but the Scotch College stroke had one of the most aggressive body/shoulder jerks I...

Re: What do we know now?
Now that Yale's 3v (presumably mostly American) beat Drexel's V8 by 12 seconds, will "club" teams stop saying they belong at the IRA? No, the argument was never that the top clubs were going to compete for an IRA National Championship with the top Varsity programs, whether that was Brown'...

Re: What do we know now?
By that logic, let’s save time and money and have Columbia, Penn, GW, Georgetown, and dartmouth stay home too cuz they sure as hell don’t belong either.fearlesselite wrote:Now that Yale's 3v (presumably mostly American) beat Drexel's V8 by 12 seconds, will "club" teams stop saying they belong at the IRA?
