Re: 2nd journal club- Training for intense exercise
Additionally, in my further reading, I stumbled across a paper that expands upon the above ideas with some more numbers and a wider range of studies included. Particularly interesting was a section on longitudinal studies of training diaries by danish rowers from 1970 -2001 - http://onlinelibrary.wi...

Re: 2nd journal club- Training for intense exercise
One of the things that struck me about the article is the PGC-1alpha master switch appears to be activated by both the Calmodulin and AMP pathways. While specific numbers weren't given, and I think that's an area that is probably ripe for further research, I find it interesting that both training me...

Re: Can you change a Type2a/b to a Type 1??
I'm still trying to grasp why you would want a large number of Type - I muscle fibers. If you are predominantly Type-IIa, (FTO), thats' the holy grail for VO2Max level events like rowing. They're oxidative enough to consume lactate, but at the same time have the larger number of active cross bridges...

Re: Hudson vs. Vespoli throwdown
Can someone explain how the psychology of trying a different boat is eliminated from this "test". In medicine, the placebo effect is particularly strong and so when a new medication is test, often the testing physician is blinded to which medication the patient is receiving. The way it wo...

A year? These kids way exceed that.[/quote]Gangles wrote: 150 to 200 hours of training a year
.... whoops. My math skills are terribly rusty - 30x50 /= 150.
I meant to say 1500/2000. Fixed that.

Re: Is there such a thing-- "Too Anaerobic"
Yea...Lets go back to the 1970s training methodology, thats a wonderful idea! (Insert you're an idiot emoticon) well, I think it's a question of benefit. I know that in HS I was slow, but won my fair share of races because I was technically proficient. I think that until you get to a highly trained...

Re: Best College Erg Score: 6K and 2K
People are not built the same size and without different weight categories there is no way that most lightweights would be competitive with heavy weights once you get to a certain level of competitiveness. dad vails and club teams may be different, but when the competitiveness increases it is witho...

One of the questions I have is whether or not people who should go, may not have the opportunity to go because of cost.fatatatim wrote:the opportunity only rolls around once...you will regret not going later on. It is worth every penny for many reasons.

Re: Men's NT Relocated to Chula Vista
do we know what the USOC/ARCO Training Center are putting up for resources? For all our bellyaching about previous underfunding, it's possible that the HPC/USRowing board have worked out a deal to consolidate and pool resources allowing more money to be spent on a larger athlete pool, more coaching,...

Re: Is there such a thing-- "Too Anaerobic"
Gangles, The dogma for years was that lactate forms in the absence of O2. That has been thoroughly disproved. Push yourself harder and you will produce more lactate. Your arterial PO2 does not suddenly drop to zero nor does the cellular machinery have an absence of 02. As a matter of fact, you migh...

Re: Is there such a thing-- "Too Anaerobic"
When referring to training methodologies, we have to be careful - the reason that "anaerobic only" or "HIT" improves the aerobic system is due to systemic upregulation of aerobic metabolism due to intense exercise stress, and EPOC. It's a mistake to think that 30 second intervals...

Re: Low ratings and heart rates
Personally, when I'm practicing I always want to beat the other boat. No matter what. A rate cap and a HR cap are hard to have at the same time. I always want to win and when there is a rate cap, the only thing to do is push harder, which sends my HR way up. I understand the problem though, it turn...

Re: Membership
Frankly, I think that mandatory membership isn't all that absurd, especially if a one-day license for races is provided. Look at USA cycling - 60 bucks a year, or 90 to race both Road and Mountain. A license is required to compete, but one day licenses available. Also, all USA Cycling events, must us...

Re: Best Dad Vail schools vs Juniors?
From what I remember from HS, I think that the YNC winner would make the DV final in most years, not sure about winning though.
